CHAPTER 22
The next time Regan called home she still didn’t get to talk to Rafe.
“No, Rafe isn’t here, sweetie. He’s at work,” Mrs. Turner informed Regan. “He’s gotten a job working at an auto repair shop. We hardly ever see him these days.”
Regan was glad to hear about Rafe’s job. His doctor had said Rafe would need one to feel secure, and Regan desperately wanted her brother to feel secure. She wanted him to be glad he was back home and part of their family.
In that phone call, Regan got more unexpected news from her mom—lots of it. Apparently, Rafe had saved a little girl’s life while he was living in New York. Recently, the little girl’s grandmother died and granted a large sum of money to Rafe in her Will. “He bought himself a motorcycle!” Mrs. Turner exclaimed.
Regan’s eyebrows shot up. “A motorcycle?!”
The news was unexpected. But actually, Regan could easily picture Rafe owning one. He was definitely the motorcycle type. Regan’s mother didn’t see things that way though. She was very upset, and worried for her only son’s safety.
“He’ll be fine.” Regan spent an hour trying to reassure her mother, all the while fantasizing about riding on the back of Rafe’s motorcycle, their hair blowing wild in the wind. The thought made it hard for her to concentrate and Regan only half listened as her mom went on and on about how wonderful Rafe was with Carly, taking her to the movies and bowling and every place else their little sister wanted to go. Although Regan was only half listening, she was able to feel extremely jealous. She wanted to be home so she could do those things with Rafe as well.
But, as things turned out, Regan didn’t even get to make it home that weekend because of dance rehearsals. She was going absolutely nuts. She didn’t like going to school away from home anymore. She wanted to be with her family, in particularly her brother. She was anxious to get back home and see him again and make sure for herself that everything was really all right.
Her mother had informed her that Rafe had reentered school, and that everything seemed to be going well. But, the thing was, Regan wasn’t sure Rafe would confide in their mother if things weren’t going well. For all Regan knew, he was in a state of complete turmoil and confusion. She hadn’t gotten a chance to talk to him since she’d been there over two weeks ago, and he was never home when she called. She was frantic with the need to be with him, and make sure everything was really okay.
When Regan finally arrived home late Friday afternoon, Rafe was still at work. She paced about her house restlessly until she couldn’t stand it any longer. Then she called Abbey, asking her friend to drive her to the garage where Rafe worked—a place called “Jay’s Auto Repair.” Regan could have driven “their” car—the car she and Rafe were supposedly to
